Shellac Manicure

Shellac manicure, also known as gel manicure, is a popular type of nail treatment that combines elements of traditional nail polish with the durability and longevity of gel nails. It involves a specific process and specialized products to create a scratch-resistant and long-lasting manicure.

Preparation

The nails are cleaned and prepared by pushing back the cuticles and shaping the nails. The nail technician can also gently polish the surface of the nails to create a better bonding surface for the shellac varnish.

Treatment

  1. Base coat : A clear or slightly colored shellac base coat is applied to the nails. The nails are then placed under a UV or LED lamp to harden and strengthen the base coat. The curing process helps to ensure that the polish adheres well to the nails.
  2. Color application : After the base coat has hardened, one or more layers of colored shellac are applied to the nails. Each layer is followed by a curing step under the UV or LED lamp. The curing process usually takes around 30-60 seconds per layer.
  3. Top coat : When the desired color intensity is achieved, a clear top coat of shellac varnish is applied. The top coat gives shine to the nails and provides an extra layer of protection. The nails are cured under the lamp again to attach the top coat.

End

After the topcoat has cured, any remaining sticky surface of the nails is wiped off with a specialized solution to reveal the glossy surface. The nails are now completely dry and ready for use without the risk of infection or chipping.

Removal

When you are ready to remove your shellac manicure, it is recommended to visit a salon to get it done properly. The technician will gently sand the top layer of the shellac to break the seal, and then cotton soaked in acetone will be placed on the nails and wrapped in foil. This allows the acetone to soften the shellac, making it easier to remove without damaging the natural nails.

It is important to note that shellac manicures should ideally be removed by professionals to avoid damaging the natural nails. Improper removal techniques or peeling off the shellac can lead to nail damage.

Maintenance

Shellac manicures are known for their long-lasting properties, often lasting around two weeks or more without chipping. However, a small gap may form between the cuticle and the color as your natural nails grow. If desired, you can return to the salon to have the shellac removed and reapplied by professionals.
